Cancer Care

Chemotherapy refers to the usage of drugs to treat cancer. Kanak Nursing Home provides the best
facility and the best oncologists in Kolkata to diagnose and lay a course of treatment for all kinds of
cancers. A fully equipped daycare ward with compassionate and caring staff takes care of every need of
the patient undergoing chemotherapy at Kanak Nursing Home. The team of oncologists works in
cohesion with other departments at the hospital to provide a comprehensive approach towards the
treatment.
Chemotherapy targets the cancer cells that are growing rapidly and uncontrollably. Unlike other
treatments, which are specifically targeted to one area of the body, chemo can work throughout the
body.

Chemotherapy can be used for the following purposes:

1- To shrink the size of cancer before surgery.
2- To destroy the remaining cancer cells after surgery or radiation therapy.
3- It is often combined with other therapies to make them more effective.
4- To destroy cancer cells that might have returned to any part of the body.
The goal of chemotherapy can vary between curing cancer completely by destroying the cells,
controlling the rapid growth of cancer cells or easing the pain associated with the growth of cells that
might create pressure and pain on other organs.

Chemotherapy can be prescribed in the following ways:

1- Injection: The drugs/medicine is injected directly into the muscle or the fatty part of your arms,
thighs or stomach, just beneath the skin.
2- Intra-aerial: The medicine is injected into the artery that is directly feeding cancer using a soft
needle or a catheter.
3- Intraperitoneal: The drugs are introduced into your peritoneal cavity containing organs like liver,
stomach and reproductive organs via surgery.
4- Intrathecal: The drugs are injected into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) found around your spinal
cord and brain.
5- Intravenous: One of the most common ways, medicine is supplied directly into a vein using an
IV.
6- Topical: You are given a cream that you apply on the skin and it is absorbed through it.
7- Oral: You are given pills that have drugs to treat cancer cells.
The chemotherapy cycle would depend on the stage of cancer cells in your body as well as the goal of
the treatment (cure, control or ease).
